ABSTRACT

Five species of the Laboulbeniales, including two unrecorded species are reported from South Korea. They are as follows; Dioicomyces anthici Thaxter on Anthicus confucii Marseul, Laboulbenia melanaria Thaxter on Anisodacthius tricuspidatus Morawitz, L. philonthi Thaxter on Philonthus wuesthoffi Bernhauer, Peyritschiella japonicus Terada on Philonthus japonicus Sharp, and Scaphidiomyces baeocerae Thaxter on Scaphisoma unicolor Achard. Among these species, L. melanaria Thaxter, S. baeocerae Thaxter and the male thallus of D. anthici Thaxter are newly described from South Korea. L. Philonthi Thaxter and P. japonicus Terada are newly collected in some places where were unlike with the examined region ago.

ABSTRACT

One new species of the genus Euphoriomyces was collected on Scaphisoma rufum Achard (Scaphidiidae) in South Korea. Euphoriomyces chaekyui sp. nov. is unique in having a single terminal phialide shaped an elongated cylindrical form on the distal portion of the main axis.

ABSTRACT

One new species of the genus Coreomyces was collected on Micronecta sedula from the island of Java; C. javanicus sp. nov. is very similar to and apparently closely related to C. corixae. This species is characterized by a receptacle that is bent towards one side with cell I, nearly rounded. The length of cell I is equal to that of cell II and the perithecia are longitudinal, elliptical or cylindrical. Thalli consistently occurred on the margin of the left elytron of the hosts.

ABSTRACT

Four species of Laboulbeniales collected from Java Island, Indonesia between August and September in 2006 are described. These species, which belong to the genus Coreomyces and were found on the family Corixidae of the order Hemiptera, were as follows; Coreomycus corixae Thaxter, Coreomyces micronectae Thaxter and Coreomyces orientalis Thaxter, which were found on Micronecta sedula Horvath, and Coreomyces recurvatus Thaxter, which was found on Micronecta sedula Horvath and Xenocorixa sp. C. corixae Thaxter and C. orientalis Thaxter were originally found on Micronecta, whereas C. recurvatus Thaxter was originally found on Xenocorixa. All species described herein are new to Java Island. The specimens were deposited in the Biological Herbarium, Division of Science Education, College of Education, Chosun University.

ABSTRACT

Three species of the genus Euphoriomyces (Laboulbeniales) were found newly from Korea. E. agathidii (Maire) Tavales was collected from Agathidium sp. (Leiodidae, Coleoptera). The characteristic traits of this species are the distal portion of the primary axis composed of 5~11 superposed layers and bearing more or less the elongated appendages. E. cybocephali (Thaxter) Thaxter was collected from Pseudocolenis hilleri Reitter (Leiodidae, Coleoptera). The primary axis of this species composed of 5~9 superposed layers is simple, not branched and a single antheridium occurs on the apex of the secondary axis. E. sugiyamae Majewski was collected from Scaphisoma rufum Achard (Scaphidiidae, Coleoptera). This species is very unique in having the antheridia formed as coner cells with lateral necks.

ABSTRACT

Two species of the Laboubeniales based on the Tibetan collections are described. They are new to the mycological flora of Tibet. Laboulbenia polyphaga found on several parts of Amara majuscula was characterized by having the outer appendages not ramified and simple. Peyritschiella protea obtained on the lower abdomen of Philonthus wuesthoffi, had two perithecia and two antheridia produced on the third layer of receptacle.

Corethromyces purpurascens on several parts of Ochthephilum densipenne, Laboulbenia barbara on the metasternum of Philonthus longicornis and L. compressa on the elytra of Harpalus tinctulus were found.

ABSTRACT

Three species of the Laboulbenia are newly described from Korea. Laboulbenia borealis were collected from the sternites of the back abdomen of Gyrinus japonicus. L. humilis were collected from the upper side of the abdomen of Chlaenius naeviger. L. benjaminii were collected from the abdomen of Stenolophus difficilis.

ABSTRACT

The multiple correlation coefficient between the values determined by dry weight and those determined by fluorometer was observed with r = 0.96 and the standard error of calibration was 0.034. Using the best calibration data, in order to reconfirm the reliability of the fluorometer results in comparison with those obtained by dry weight on the cell concentration, fedbatch cultures were carried out. The results obtained by fluorometer measurements were in good agreement with those obtained by dry weight. The on-line monitoring of cell concentration by the fermentor system linked to a computer equipped with fluorometer was successfully carried out.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: It is known that depression and anxiety tendency causes physical or social dysfunction. Nowadays, the air travel is increasing as the life condition has been improved so the health of pilots who are in charge of passengers become a very important issue. However, few studies have been done on this issue, especially the relationship between depression & anxiety and medical diseases among them. This study was performed to know the factors affection pilots' sick leave and the correlation between depression & anxiety and sick leave. METHODS: Self administered questionaires were obtained from 123 pilots of one of the airline companies at Seoul from 1st April to 30th may 2003. Depression tendency was measured based upon BDI, the level of anxiety was measured by the standardised STAI and obesity was diagnosed if a BMI is over 25 kg/m2. The data on the subjects' age, position, airlines and the days of sick leave were obtained from personal record. RESULTS: All the study subjects were male with the average age of 40.23+/-7.48 (ranging from 30 to 60). The average age for those who had sick leave was 34.58+/-3.50 and that for those who had not was 40.48+/-7.55 and these two average ages showed difference with statistical significance (P value 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study shows that the average age of sick leave group was lower than that of non-sick leave group (P<0.001). The level of depression and anxiety were not related to the sick leave. The reasons for this seems to be the fact that pilots are healthier than general population and also they pay more attention to their own health. The younger pilots tended to have more days of sick leave, which might be explain that the older pilots were more cautious about the disadvantages of having sick leave but, the younger pilots tend to have strong individualistic personalities.

ABSTRACT

Eight species belonging to two genera of the Laboulbeniales, parasitic on the family Carabidae and Staphylinidae of the order Coleoptera, were collected from Upo natural swamp in 1996-2001. They are as follows; Laboulbenia anoplogenii parasitic on Platynus daimio, L. cristata on Paederus parallelus, L. egens on Tachys laetifica, L. flagellata on Platynus daimio, L. pedicellata on Bembidion morawitzi, L. philonthi on Philonthus wuesthoffi, L. stenolophi on Acupalpus inornatus and Philonthus longicornis, and Peyritschiella biformis on Philonthus micaticollis. Among these species, the genus Platynus as the host of L. anoplogenii and the genus Acupalpus as the host of L. stenolophi are new to science. Bembidion morawitzi as the host of Laboulbenia pedicellata and Philonthus micanticollis as the host of Peyritschiella biformis are new to Korea.

ABSTRACT

Six species of the genus Laboulbenia were collected from some regions of Yunnan Province, China, in July, 1994. They are as follows; Laboulbenia acupapi Spegazzini was collected on Abacetus submetallicus (Nietner) and Stenolophus iridicolor Redtenbacher. The host of this fungus has been only found on genus Acupalpus in the world so far, but it was newly found on genus Abacetus and Stenolophus. Laboulbenia anoplogenii Thaxter subsp. abaceti Santamaria was collected on Abacetus submetallicus (Nietner). Laboulbenia elaphri Spegazzini was collected on Nebria ochotica Sahlberg, but the host of this fungus has been only found on genus Elaphrus in the world so far. It was newly collected on genus Nebria. Laboulnebia flagellata Peyritsch was collected on Harpalus platynotus Bates and Platynus sculptipes (Bates). Laboulbenia polyphaga Thaxter was collected on Harpalus bungii Chaudoir. Laboulbenia vulgaris Peyritsch was collected on Bembidion misellum Harold and Bembidon scopulium (Kirby).

ABSTRACT

It is well known that tumor necrosis factor (TNF-a), interleukin-1, platelet-activating factor (PAF) and arachidonic acid metabolites, such as thromboxane and leukotriens, are major mediators involved in the pathogenesis of endotoxic shock. In this study, we have investigated the effect of pentoxifylline (inhibitor of TNF-a release), BN50739 (PAF antagonist), indomethacin (cyclooxygenase inhibitor) and diethylcarbamazine (lipoxygenase inhibitor) on LPS- induced lethality as well as the relationship between major mediators in endotoxic shock. All inhibitors described above except diethylcarbamazine significantly protected mice against LPS- induced lethality. BN50739 and indomethacin were also effective in protection of TNF-a-induced lethality. The elevation of circulating TNF-a by LPS was significantly blocked by BN50739, but not affected by indomethacin. Convulsion appeared shortly after LPS injection was prevented by BN50739 but not by indomethacin, whereas diarrhea and limited movement was prevented by indomethacin but not by BN50739. These results indicate that i) TNF-a, PAF and cyclooxygenase products are important mediators involved in the pathogenesis of septic shock and ii) TNF-a directly influenced the release or production of PAF as well as cyclooxygenase products, and strongly suggest that i) TNF-a and PAF stimulate the release of each other via positive feedback network but TNF-a and cyclooxygenase products do not form the network and ii) PAF and cyclooxygenase product appear not to affect the release of each other.
